The Rise of Solo Travel: Why More Travelers are Saying “Why Wait?”

After my divorce many years ago, I found myself facing a dilemma.

I wanted to travel, but most of my friends were married and raising small children. I could either wait until someone was available to join me or start exploring on my own.

I chose to travel.

Picture this: me sitting at my computer, searching phrases like “solo cruises,” “single traveler cruises,” and “travel groups for singles.” I had no idea what to expect. I just knew I wanted to see the world and wasn’t willing to wait for the perfect travel companion.

After doing some research, I decided to start traveling with a singles cruise group. I would sign up on my own, often be paired with a roommate, and head off on adventures without knowing a single person.

What amazed me was how quickly those trips turned strangers into friends. I’d board the ship by myself and leave with a group of people who shared my love of travel and exploring new places.

That experience taught me something important: solo travel doesn’t have to mean traveling alone.

In fact, some of the most meaningful connections I’ve made happened because I stepped outside my comfort zone and took that first trip.

Today, millions of travelers are making a similar choice. They’re no longer waiting for the perfect travel companion. They’re pursuing their travel dreams now.

What has changed is who is choosing to travel on their own.

Why Solo Travel Is Growing

Solo travel isn’t a new concept, but it is attracting more attention than ever before.

Today’s solo travelers include professionals taking a much-needed break, empty nesters pursuing long-postponed dreams, retirees exploring new destinations, widows and divorced travelers rediscovering their independence, and even married travelers whose interests or schedules don’t always align with their partner’s.

In other words, there is no typical solo traveler anymore.

People from every generation and stage of life are discovering that they don’t have to wait for someone else to make their travel dreams a reality.

Many solo travelers are looking for freedom to create their own schedule, personal growth and confidence, meaningful cultural experiences, time for reflection and self-discovery and the opportunity to pursue long-delayed travel dreams.

Perhaps the biggest shift is that people are no longer waiting.

They’re not waiting for friends to retire.

They’re not waiting for family schedules to align.

They’re not waiting for “someday.”

They’re traveling now.

Solo Doesn’t Mean Lonely

One of the biggest misconceptions about solo travel is that it’s lonely.

In reality, many travelers report the opposite.

That was certainly my experience. Through singles cruise groups, I met people from across the country who shared my passion for exploring new places. What started as travel companions quickly became genuine friendships.

When you’re traveling on your own, you’re often more approachable. You’re more likely to strike up conversations with locals, connect with fellow travelers, join group excursions, or engage more deeply with a destination.

Many travelers return home with not only memories of the places they visited but also friendships they never expected to make.

Solo Travel Looks Different at Every Stage of Life

One of the most interesting findings from recent travel studies is that every generation approaches solo travel differently.

In your 20s, solo travel may be about adventure and self-discovery.

In your 40s and 50s, it may be about reclaiming time for yourself after years of building a career, raising children, or caring for others.

In retirement, it may be about finally taking the trips you’ve dreamed about for decades.

The motivations may differ, but the outcome is often the same: a sense of freedom, accomplishment, and confidence that comes from exploring the world on your own terms.

The Travel Industry Is Paying Attention

As solo travel becomes more popular, travel suppliers are responding.

Cruise lines, tour operators, and river cruise companies are increasingly offering solo-friendly options, including:

•Reduced or waived single supplements on select sailings
•Dedicated solo cabins
•Hosted group experiences
•Excursions designed to encourage connection among travelers

For travelers who have been curious about traveling solo but worried about extra costs, there are more opportunities than ever before.

Solo Travel Opportunities Worth Exploring

One of the most encouraging developments for solo travelers is that more travel companies are recognizing this growing market and creating opportunities specifically designed for independent travelers.

Here are a few options that may be worth considering:

River Cruises

River cruising can be an excellent choice for first-time solo travelers. With guided excursions, smaller ships, and a welcoming atmosphere, many travelers find it offers the perfect balance of independence and connection.

On a recent river cruise, my sister and I met some women who were traveling on their own. Before long, we were sharing dinners, exploring ports together, and getting to know one another throughout the trip. It was a wonderful reminder that solo travelers are often some of the most open, interesting, and adventurous people you’ll meet.

One of the things I love most about river cruising is how naturally connections develop. The smaller ships, shared excursions, and intimate atmosphere make it easy to get to know fellow travelers while still enjoying plenty of independence.

For travelers who are curious about solo travel but aren’t quite ready to venture completely on their own, river cruising can offer a wonderful combination of comfort, community, and discovery.

Several river cruise lines periodically offer reduced or waived single supplements on select sailings, making these experiences more accessible than ever.

Small-Group Guided Tours

If you’d like the freedom of traveling independently while enjoying the camaraderie of a group, small-group tours can be a wonderful option.

You’ll have built-in opportunities to connect with fellow travelers while leaving the logistics to someone else.

I’ve booked several solo travelers on small-group tours over the years, and one thing I hear again and again when they return is how much they enjoyed the people they met along the way. Many come home not only with wonderful memories of the destination but also with new friendships and shared experiences that become highlights of the trip.

For travelers who are curious about solo travel but don’t want to feel completely on their own, a small-group tour can offer the perfect balance of independence, support, and connection.

Ocean Cruises

Many cruise lines now offer dedicated solo cabins or special promotions for solo travelers. These sailings allow you to enjoy all the benefits of cruising while maintaining the independence that makes solo travel so rewarding.

Some ships also host solo traveler meetups and social gatherings throughout the voyage, making it easy to connect with other guests who are traveling on their own. Whether you’re looking for new friendships, dinner companions, excursion partners, or simply people who share your love of travel, these gatherings can be a great way to meet fellow solo travelers.

Customized Independent Travel

Not every solo traveler wants to join a group. Some prefer the freedom of an itinerary designed specifically around their interests. With the right planning, solo travelers can enjoy the confidence of having accommodations, transportation, and key experiences arranged in advance while still maintaining the flexibility to explore on their own.

The best solo trip isn’t necessarily the most adventurous one. It’s the one that matches your travel style, comfort level, and goals.

You Don’t Have to Travel Completely Alone

One reason many people hesitate to take a solo trip is the belief that they’ll be entirely on their own.

The reality is that today’s travel options offer a wide spectrum of independence and support.

You might choose a river cruise where excursions are included and fellow travelers quickly become familiar faces. You might join a small-group tour that handles the logistics while leaving room for personal exploration. Or you might enjoy a resort stay where you can socialize when you want to and enjoy quiet time when you don’t.

Solo travel doesn’t have to mean navigating every detail by yourself.

It simply means having the freedom to travel on your own terms.

Don’t Put Your Dreams on Hold

One theme appeared again and again throughout the recent research on solo travel:

People aren’t choosing solo travel because they want to be alone.

They’re choosing it because they don’t want to put their lives on hold.

Looking back, I’m grateful I didn’t wait.

If I had postponed those trips until I found the perfect travel companion, I would have missed incredible destinations, unforgettable experiences, and friendships that have enriched my life for years.

That’s why I’m so passionate about helping others explore solo travel. Sometimes the hardest part is taking that first step. Often, it’s also the most rewarding.

If there’s a destination you’ve always wanted to visit, a river cruise you’ve been dreaming about, or a cultural experience you’ve been waiting to enjoy, it may be time to stop waiting for the perfect travel companion.

The world is ready when you are.
